Bucket Adapter Installation
Various retention methods between the adapter and bucket as well as the tooth and adapter are available. Check the condition of the bucket and repair as necessary before installing an adapter.
Bolt-On Adapters When installing a new adapter, be sure the cutting edge provides a firm mounting base. If the edge has been worn and doesn t provide support, the adapters are susceptible to breakage. Always use the attaching hardware recommended for the application. Bolt tensile strength has been matched to specific application requirements.
Bucket Adapter Installation
Weld-On Adapters Warning: Persons performing welding and other maintenance work should wear OSHA approved safety equipment such as hard hats, safety shoes and glasses, work gloves, and the proper lenses in welding gear. When welding adapters to the bucket cutting edge, make sure the cutting edge provides a firm mounting base. This support is necessary as adapters are also susceptible to breakage. Welding to the bucket cutting edge may cause cracks in the cutting edge if a firm mounting base is not provided and good welding techniques are not followed:
1. Remove the tooth and pin from the adapter prior to welding. High welding temperatures can have a detrimental effect on tooth heat treatment.
2. Clean the area to be welded. Remove paint by sanding or grinding. Remove oil and grease using a safe solvent. Remove rust and dirt using a wire brush.
3. On hydrostatic crawler loaders, preheat the cutting edge holes (second set from each end) to 400 F (204 C).
4. Use a temperature stick (Tempilstik or equivalent) to check preheat temperature.
5. Fill the holes with plug welds.
6. Grind weld flush with top cutting edge surface.
7. Tack weld the rear of the adapter to the cutting edge.
8. Preheat adapter to F ( C) before welding. Use a temperature stick to check for correct temperature.
9. Use a smaller diameter (0.12 (3 mm) maximum) electrode to make the J- groove welds with an unequal leg fillet weld (2). Extend the longer leg onto the cutting edge.
10. Start at the rear of the adapter. Weld one pass to 1 (25.4 mm) from the edge (4). Weld one pass on the other side of the adapter.
11. Chip off the slag and peen each weld bead after each pass. Alternate from one side of the adapter to the other side for each pass.
12. After all adapters are welded, uniformly heat the edge and all adapters to 400 F (204 C). Let the adapters and cutting edge cool slowly in still air.
